Elsewhere Studios' Artist Residency

posted July 10th, 2019

The Residency

I was recently accepted into Elsewhere Studios' Fall Artist Residency in Paonia, CO. Elsewhere is a non-profit organization that hosts visual artists, writers, musicians, performance artists and more at any stage of their career. The mission of the residency is to provide a rich, calm setting for artists to connect with each other and dive deep into their practice to bring their work to the next level.

Paonia has attracted artists, organic/biodynamic farmers and community minded folks for decades. This has resulted in a community of strong individuals, high interest in sustainable lifestyles, and a growing art scene where the mountains meet the desert.

How your help and this residency will support my artistic practice

This residency offers the unique opportunity to have focused and uninterrupted time to further develop my painting practice and connect with other artists. Without financial support, I will not be equipped to utilize my time at Elsewhere to its full potential.

My art practice investigates challenges with chronic illness and mental health by using painting as a tool to process trauma and sensory experiences in the body. The images I create refer to the physicality of being human and the history of what a body has endured, physically and psychologically. I use oil paint, gouache, graphite, and charcoal to abstract the figure, expressing physiological and visceral experiences in the human form. Over the years the pathologies attributed to abuse, assault, disease, and chronic pain in my personal life have loosened their hold as I continue to process them in my images. I find this journey to be a commitment to healing and resisting the forces, internal and external, that would prefer for me to reject my body. Through this work I can meditate on the strange and uncomfortable experience of inhabiting a body, and through this investigation I repair the relationship I have to my own physicality. Spending time in a rich, quiet landscape like Paonia will provide me with a grounded environment in which I can investigate these themes further, continue healing and help my artistic practice mature.

Additionally, sharing a space with artists who, like myself, are seeking to cultivate a deeper sense of connection with their artistic process will provide further support to achieve these goals. While painting is usually a solitary process for me, exchanging ideas and feedback with other artists is crucial for mutual growth.

How you can help:

1. Share my
GoFundMe page

Elsewhere provides studio space, access to artist resources, teaching opportunities, and community connections that will help my practice flourish. While Elsewhere Studios receives a lot of a grant funding to make the residency as affordable as possible, I am still required to pay for housing, art supplies, and general living expenses such as groceries.

The living space I will be staying in is a small private room (about 9x10 ft with a 5x9ft sleeping loft), with use of main floor studio space (approximately 330 sq ft), and shared kitchen, bath, common area and outside yard. Utilities and WiFi are included. This space is $600/month ($1,200 for my 2 month stay).

Aside from paying for housing, funds will be used for personal groceries while attending the residency, gas for transportation, and the art materials I will need to create new work.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this. If you don't have the means to donate, sharing my fundraiser is GREATLY appreciated. Love and gratitude to you all.

"How We Bloom"

posted August 14th, 2018

MINNEAPOLIS, MN – AUGUST 8, 2018 – 2 artists of the California Building 2nd Floor will showcase their work in a 2-person exhibition in the on2gallery during September and October of 2018.

Brenda Litman  is always inspired by the forces of nature which surround and nurture our life journey. We are part of nature, her seasonal cycles and interdependent plan.  We bloom as we wend our way through her garden. All who live in our nation inhabit that garden, forming a rich mosaic of entwined blossoms; the ethnicities, the races, the people who immigrated over time and built our country.  In new paintings, Litman celebrates them and the hard working people currently aspiring to make our country their new home.

Madison Rubenstein’s  work is an investigation of how our mind and body relate to each other through trauma. She uses abstracted figure, color, shape, and line to refer to the physicality of being human and the history of what a body has endured, physically and psychologically. Through making images she is able to meditate on the strange and uncomfortable experience of inhabiting a body, and through this experience, she repairs the relationship she has to her own physicality.

Meet the artists: September 8, 1-3pm with Brenda Litman and Madison Rubenstein in the gallery.

Artists on the 2nd floor will  have their studios open and be on hand to meet visitors and discuss their work during the Second Saturday open Studio dates.

March 4th - March 25th

City Wide Artists is celebrating their one year anniversary in a big way. Bringing in 60+ artists, this show will be packed to the brim with some of the most talked about and up-incomming artists in the Twin Cities.

"Inspired by Times Square Show, the legendary 1980 group show that catapulted artists such as Jean Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring to the forefront of the 80’s art scene and popular culture; CWA has spent time meeting some of the Twin Cities’ most interesting, talked (or whispered) about known, and unknown artists.  From wheat paste to fine painting, it will be a mix of ideas, mediums and what we hope will be the best example of work from the various communities making up our inner city art scene."

Stop by March 4th @6pm for opening night celebrations.

A Mention

February 8th, 2014

I received a very generous write-up in a friend's blog about my work. Check him out here.

"There resides in Minneapolis a young savant of art-spiration and quality loose leaf teas. Madison Elyse Rubenstein has called the Twin Cities her home for the best years of her life, and god willing, many more. In the time I’ve known her, Madison’s art has expressed a freedom of sense, a transcendental respect for the individual experience; if wonderment had a flavor, I would be hard pressed to doubt it to be her transformative pieces. Inspired by the likes of Carl Jung, she challenges what, as humans, we are willing to set as boundaries for the subconscious, the visceral, the macabre, and the internalized. As an artist myself, my greatest challenge is conjuring up the nerve to provide life to a collective work, to align pieces with a sheer and feather-light hope that they will relate and connect. Madison can do this with a seemingly effortless grace, although grace would be the last word she would use. She would say, “It isn’t about thought. Art is messy. It’s a feeling. You’re looking at different parts of you and maybe some you didn’t know were there.” This whimsy is a grounding force for her, and each project adheres to the concept of feeling over form, although her proclivity for using unconventional techniques and media is what I have come to admire most about her art, and you should too."

Tea Pressed Art

February 7th, 2014

I've started another series of tea prints. Using a method of mono printing, I utilize different combinations of fresh and ground tea leaves, goji berries, hibiscus, rose, lavender, and anything else that might be steeped for a warm beverage. Very soon I will be selling these at Verdant Tasting Bar & Tea Room in the Seward neighborhood of Minneapolis. Stay tuned!
